Have your say on proposed Turfhall Road infrastructure upgrades

Members of the public and interested parties are invited to submit comments on the proposed road infrastructure upgrades along Turfhall Road between Belgravia Road and Newfields Road. This project forms part of the City of Cape Town’s Comprehensive Integrated Transport Plan, Congestion Relief Programme and Integrated Public Transport Network. Interested parties or groups are given the opportunity to submit comments, recommendations or input from today, 12 November, to 15 December 2025.

‘We’re inviting local residents to play an active role in shaping these plans. You can share your feedback with the City through our various communication channels or join us in person at the upcoming community information session in Athlone on Wednesday, 19 November. There, you’ll have the opportunity to view the proposed designs, meet our project team and contribute your ideas. The project proposes a series of road infrastructure upgrades designed to improve the overall capacity and efficiency of the road network. These enhancements will help create better access for public transport, active mobility, and private vehicles alike. Together, we can build roads that truly serve everyone and keep Cape Town moving,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

The project proposes the following road infrastructure upgrades:

Dual carriageway - Belgravia Road to Newfields Road
New and improved walking and cycling facilities - Jan Smuts Drive to Orion Road
New public transport embayment
Improved crossing points for pedestrians and cyclists
Turfhall Road / Surran Road - new intersection
Turfhall road / David Road intersection - conversion to a left-in/left-out system with a median barrier

The Public information day will be held day at the Rylands Civic Centre, 38 Balu Parker Boulevard, Rylands, Athlone on Wednesday, 19 November 2025 from 15:00 – 18:00. This will be an informal, drop-in engagement, allowing residents to pop by during the three-hour window to directly engage the project management team.

In terms of section 17 of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, Act 32 of 2000, the public and interested parties or groups are given the opportunity to submit comments, recommendations or input on this proposal to the municipality from 12 November to 15 December 2025.
